UPDATE - JULY 28, 2012

This has been an eventful and gratifying week for my campaign. I am very grateful to the National Federation of Independent Business and the Florida Chamber of Commerce for their endorsement of my campaign for Senate District 2. As a small businessman in Northwest Florida, I am committed to creating and supporting a pro-business environment to help our industries and local entrepreneurs create jobs and succeed.

On news around the district, I had the honor of speaking to 20 young men and women who were graduating from the 5-day learning “Ambition AIR” program at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola yesterday. It is always a rewarding experience to spark the interest of Florida’s youth with such hands-on, high-tech and exciting programs that help them realize what opportunities lie ahead if they follow their ambitions, in this case, into the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. Graduating from the program were 20 bright young minds, currently in foster care, and I would like to personally thank the sponsors of such a wonderful event and for giving our foster youth the chance to have this unique experience.

Yesterday morning, we also had the wonderful blessing of welcoming home Marine Corporal Daniel Palmer, who was stationed in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, after sustaining an injury while serving in Afghanistan in 2010. His family, friends, and fellow service men and women gathered at a Pensacola Aviation Center hangar to receive this local hero and show him that our communities are grateful for his dedication, incredible courage and service to our nation. Many blessings to Marine Cpl. Palmer and his wonderful family.

This afternoon, I will be participating in the Jay Historical Society’s “Stump” Political Rally at the Bray-Hendricks City Park Pavilion at 4 p.m. It will be a great chance for local folks to hear from their candidates on their perspectives and priorities for Santa Rosa County, and I hope to see you out there!

UPDATE - JULY 21, 2012

Friends,

Today, I will be attending the Bagdad Volunteer Fire Department Political Rally at 4 p.m., located at 7043 Oak Street in Bagdad, Florida. If you are able to join us, make sure you come and test your aim at the dunking booth, where I will be testing my own luck at getting soaked. If you are in the area, don't miss out on this opportunity. I hope to see and meet as many of you out here!

In other news, the State of Florida has reduced the Medicaid bill for counties across the state by $171.4 million. When the bill to withhold state revenue sharing from counties with outstanding and disputed Medicaid charges came in front me during the past Legislative Session, I voted against the measure because I knew full well that there are underlying problems with AHCA’s billing system, including duplicative billing, lack of documentation and billing for non-residents, that could attribute to these so called charges being owed by the counties. Escambia County for example, was being charged for residents receiving services in Escambia County, Alabama. I was also aware of the significant impact this would have on the counties I represent, and it has been my goal to continue to work with key folks from Escambia County and AHCA until the integrity in the billing process is restored. Thankfully, the disputed amount for all 67 counties has been cut by more than half of what the counties were being charged, from $316 million to $146.4 million, and specifically, the disputed amount for Escambia County was cut from $8.5 million to just over $4.2 million, for Santa Rosa County it was cut from $813,000 to just over $34,000 and for Okaloosa County it was cut from $839,540 to just over $277,000. It is fair and necessary that our counties are only held accountable for what they truly owe and that any underlying issues that contribute to the miscalculation of charges be addressed and resolved.

Also this Saturday, I will be attending the Berrydale Political Rally and Fish Fry, starting at 4 p.m. I want to thank the Berrydale Fire Department for kindly sponsoring the event and I hope to see many of you out there!
