We have a sorry record of enforcing the laws we pass governing financial matters. Look at the failed laws of the past about everything from whistle blowing to preventing the misallocation of federal funds. Apparently, GAO does not give early warning of impending financial disaster, nor does Congress care, nor the president should it serve his purposes. The CBO appears to be as voiceless.
There are hundreds of people in a position to track our financial condition and trends. We have regulations in place for evaluating the life cycle impact of each spending bill. Who is watching the store?
We can have the very best technical, operational, and personnel performance and systems, yet, if we do not have excellent administrative/financial performance we will negate all the other plusses.
How long does it take for a some politicians to learn how to add and subtract, and to commit to doing their duty.
This will continue until we elect people who have the character, fortitude and common sense to make good law and ensure it is followed.
And we need an Attorney General of the United States and Inspectors General of each department capable of and dedicated to enforcing the laws of the land.
